Chesil Beach and Portland
The Isle of Portland is a huge mound of stone projecting into the channel at the southernmost tip of the Isle of Portland, overlooking the English Channel, is found the famous lighthouse, Portland Bill. The present lighthouse was erected in 1906, and also houses the Visitor Centre, open during April to September The museum of local history can be found in the 17th century Advice's Cottage, which Thomas Hardy described in his novel.
 
Portland shelters Weymouth Bay from south westerly winds and is a very interesting place to visit, its link to Weymouth  is a plateau of rock joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway of shingle which is part of the 18 mile stretch of Chesil Beach.
